Chapter 15

EARL MUTTERED TO HIMSELF as he tried to find a parking spot near the hospital. “You would think they would have a decent parking lot,” Earl groused. He looked over at Zoe, who was staring out the window, oblivious to his problems.

Earl finally found a spot and parked the car. He was quite sure it was illegal to park there, but he wasn’t going to worry about it. If he got a parking fine, well, he got a parking fine, he thought to himself.

They walked briskly down the road towards the huge edifice. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital was the largest hospital in Sydney and the oldest. Its sandstone entrance was quite beautiful, and under other circumstances Zoe would have stopped to admire it. They entered the lobby area which, with its high ornate ceilings, looked almost like a church, with a tiny chapel to the right.

Zoe was impatient to find her partner. “Come on,” she muttered as she watched the elevator stop at every floor of the twelve-floor building.

Earl glanced at his friend and hoped the elevator got there soon before Zoe decided to take the steps. To his relief, the elevator finally arrived and Zoe was inside before the doors had a chance to open fully.

As soon as the elevator came to a stop, Zoe once again shot through the doors. Waiting near the elevator were Debbie and Hester, both covered in paint.

“Where is she?” Zoe asked the Minister without offering a greeting to Eva’s boss.

Earl put his arm around his friend and turned her face towards him. “I want you to calm down, Zoe. You’re not going to do Eva any good if she sees you out of control. You know how disturbed she gets if you’re upset.” He leaned down and whispered into her ear. Zoe looked up at her friend, who leaned down and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “It’s going to be okay,” Earl promised, hoping he wasn’t going to be made into a liar.

Hester walked up to Zoe and took her hand. “Zoe, sit down for a minute. I want you to listen to me, okay?”

Zoe nodded. She wasn’t calm at all and the last thing she wanted was to listen to Percy Hester right now. What she wanted was to be with Eva, to hold her. She wanted to see for herself that Eva was okay.

“Eva was hurt when she was hit by a paint drum,” Hester told the shocked young woman. He couldn’t quite believe how the accident had happened himself. “When Eva walked out of her office, the painters lost control of their ladders. The paint drum was sitting on a scaffold in between the two ladders.”

“That’s so stupid,” Earl muttered.

“Yes, it is and when I get back to the office, heads are going to roll,” Hester muttered, then realized he should have used another phrase. He turned his attention back to the young woman. “Eva walked out at the wrong time. It was too late for her to do anything and the paint drum knocked her into the wall.
